I have owned two Td5 Discovery II's and both issues happened to me. The molten dowels I just replaced with steel ones as Land Rover did from 2003 onwards. The oil in the injector harness is a recurring problem, but I just replaced the bit of the harness going from the rocker cover to the ECU. It's a small job with little costs involved.

Sep 30, 2016. #1. I have a 2004 TD5 which I have owned since 2006. During this time it has had at least 6 fuel pump relays! Another one has just failed today. It died on me in traffic and I rolled to a halt with the engine management light on. Luckily it restarted without too much trouble on that occasion. I got out of the traffic and pulled over.
Either defender or discovery, as they both have the same engine they will have some of the same problems in common ? Ideally a defender was in mind, my dad said his old td5 defender was hard work. He had two ecu's, all the injectors renewed, it has a sticky ingector on the third cylinder and if it got bellow 0 degrees he lost a lot of engine power.
